Pastelitos de guayaba y queso (pronounced pas-te-lee-tos / de / gwa-ya-ba/ ee/ que-so) are guava and cheese pastries. Growing up in Miami, we always had these Cuban-American pastries at our family gatherings and they are one of the foods I miss most!
These pastelitos are sweet, flaky, and airy. They guava offers a sweet citrusy flavor and the cream cheese adds a savory layer.
Tips:
- Be sure to use pepperidge farm frozen puff pastry as these are the easier to work with for this recipe.
- For the filling, I share exact measurements for everything, but don’t be afraid to trust your intuition and make them how you’d like!

You will need:
- 1 box of Pepperidge Farm Frozen Puff Pastry Sheets
- 1 egg
- 8 oz of sliced guava paste
- 8 oz block of cream cheese
- 2 tablespoons of flaky sea salt
- 1 tablespoon of water
- 2 teaspoons of all purpose flour
Directions:
- Preheat your oven to 375F.
- Take the frozen puff pastry and follow the microwave instructions on the box to thaw both sheets.
- Sprinkle half of the flour on a flat surface.
- Once the puff pastry is thawed, lay it on the flat surface and use a roller to gently flatten it. Be sure to flatten both sheets. Sprinkle more all purpose flour if the dough begins to stick to the roller or the surface.
- Next, cut each sheet into 3×3 squares to create 9 squares on each sheet. In total you should have 18 squares.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place 9 pastry squares.
- Add a slice of cream cheese, a slice of guava paste, and a pinch of flaky salt on each pastry square. Tip: You can decide how much of each you want based on your personal preference, but I typically add ¼ in thick slices of cream cheese and guava paste to all the pastelitos. However, I like to cut the guava paste slice in half!
- Once the filling is done, cover each pastry square with the remaining pastry squares.
- Then, use a fork to seal the edges together.
- In a small bowl, mix together the egg and water to create the egg wash.
- Use a kitchen brush to generously apply the egg wash to each pastelito, being sure to cover all the edges.
- Take a knife and cut 2-3 slits at the top of each pastelito. This will prevent the pastelitos from puffing up in the oven.
- Bake for 20 minutes, cool for 10 minutes, and enjoy!
- Yields 9 guava and cheese pastelitos
